Conventions of Conflict

A rocket being launched.

Conflict has emerged from its conventional

predictability toward a marked tilt in favour

of the aggressor with new rules of engagement.

Gone the era when the attacked used all means

at their disposal to bring to the attacker precisely

what has demolished its infrastructure, felled

its production, murdered its population and

countered its military on the even grounds of

giving as good as you get. The new formula

differs substantially from the tried-and-true

where the country under violent siege is given

rein to defend and protect on its soil but never

to venture across a border to bring to the enemy

the same battlefield conditions it has imposed

on their civilians, their hospitals, their schools

traumatizing their children, sending them to

bunkers to shrink in fear at every thunderous

blast inflicted on their homes and families. The

normal human reaction of defence leading to

revenge with no other avenues of attaining peace

with an adversary motivated by hatred, forbidden.
