Primal Avians

Swift as a moment's thought
the bird arrowed its way into the
forest thicket directly followed by
its mate as they reconnoitered
their territory intent on retrieving
burrowing creatures beneath
the bark of decaying trees
whose life sap had been destroyed
by the very marauders the
feathered avengers sought. Theirs
is the high-pitched maniacal
call akin a loon's distinguishing
these large animals from their
puny cousins. Theirs is an ancient
heritage, their conformation
reminiscent of predatory primal
creatures of long antiquity whose
instinct for survival has rewarded
them with the distinction of
masters of all they survey in
the forest for their ferocity and
intimidating size brook no
existential threats from lesser
creatures content to give these
giants of the forest wide berth.
