Tigers have stripes. Leopards havespots. You knew that. Everyone does.We can safely assume that the botanistwho named the ditch lily for its propensityto grow in ditches knew what he was about. On the other hand these are lilies knownas Tiger Lilies, and beautiful they are.Large, bright orange and certainly notstriped. But they are dotted. Leopard lilywould appear to make more sense butTiger lily they are. A wildflower so veryfamiliar to those living in rural settingswhere they grow spontaneously as allwildflowers tend to, wherever the soiland the exposure suits them; around andabout barnyards, open fields and on theverges of forests. Recalled as a familiarsight, a beautiful appearance, tall andregal, sharing an orange pigment withtigers, true, but no stripes. Cast your mindback and think: did you as a child everharbour the urge to pick them and bringsome happily to your mother? That remindsme almost sixty years ago my son did justthat and was angrily reprimanded by awoman whose cottage was close by. Anearby field full of these wonderful orangeflags and she chose to natter at a smallchild that his naughty behaviour was everso offensive. Oh, the things we recall onviewing the friendly face of the familiar.
