Or perhaps it would be more appropriate
to designate this dominant new social order
as making a silk purse out of a sow's ear
when a store clerk is called a sales associate
and the municipal garbage collector has
become a sanitary engineer. That these are
important workplace positions to society is
beyond dispute, but one imagines that in the
spirit of everybody being a somebody job
descriptions have become elaborate works of
artifice. More puzzling, however is the new/ish
social importance given to such nebulous positions
in the social order as 'fashionistas', 'influencers'
public relations marketers, social stylists etc.
the list seems endless just as those part of
celebrity culture does in a narrow, egotistical
world addicted to flash and glamour, masses
yearning to become special, recognized as
taste-guiders and -makers, intellectually adrift
values-inconsequential, facade is all that matters.
