The fury of yesterday's storm tore itself
into a frenzy of wind and cold and snow
drifts humping the landscape in a sinuous
geology of white desertification, raging wildly
through the night, refusing to give quarter to
the morning light, a hanging fog of snow
obscuring trees their needled branches hanging
limp and forlorn under a burden of snow that
even the wind was unable to disperse and the
forest was buried before the storm relaxed its
onslaught and moved haughtily onward. The
exquisite beauty of a forest immersed in frozen
sleep, a sumptuous cathedral of towering trees
the serenity that ensued appeared far from the
battlefield of the night before, revealing a white-
muffed landscape, ethereal and evanescent with
light preparing to welcome the emergent sun
sending its sublimely brilliant rays to caress the
vision of winter-iced perfection, a wonderland.
