Foret Nuit

In the forest all is still as snow

descends in lazy spirals

muffling sounds of birds

nestling for the night while

owls stir from sleep to begin

their nocturnal hunt. The swift

transition from twilight

alerting small animals to return

to their dens brings a deeper

dusk briefly preparing the forest

for the deep darkness of night

yet the tumbling, twirling snow

is defiant of the dark entry

casting its white presence over

green boughs of cedar and hemlock

settling over humped tree stumps

stippling the forest floor like ghosts

mature trees rising stark and dark

in the faint light sketched in white.
