Introspection

When we look into the liquid

drowsy eyes of a child do we see

hovering there an elusive soul

preparing to guide its bodily host

through the channels of perception

over years of encounters with life?

Or has that soul been drenched in

prior experience and knowledge

as an inheritance from predecessors

in a shared group memory complete

with the culture of awareness and

the acute significance of who and

what they are eclipsing reason when

emotions beyond personal reflection

overwhelm the receptive senses to

produce another persecuted victim

prepared to take its ancestral echo

into spiritual conflict with the world's

realities in fealty to a vision of self

sacrificed to an unseen presence held to

create and command all that exists?
