Have you noticed? The great deception
is neigh upon us. We are being led in a
teasing dance of expectation so often
repeated yet as often forgotten leaving
us vulnerable to the pranks that nature
tasks her elements with in a conspiracy
to raise hopes then pause to watch them
dashed on the hard surface of reality. The
densely snow-packed terrain in the forest
still strains under snowfalls drifting into
the canopy awaiting dispersal by winter's
ill-tempered winds. Yet as winter wanes
so does the frigid cold under a renascent
spring-ready sun. And slowly melts the
snowpack enticing winter to call up yet
another fury of a snowstorm. Replenishing
that which was lost. Yet the inevitability
of change heralding a new season cannot
be forever forestalled. The stream in the
forested ravine swells with meltwater, wide
dark and deep funnelling itself to a river far
beyond. Just yesterday it was frozen, then
freed, a winter-obsessed repetition. Resigned
the forest awaits release from a too-long sleep
anxious to draw sap from the rich humus of
perennial leaf mass to breathe and to sigh as
life returns with winter's loathe departure.
