Technological Hubris

How clever we are! Or perhaps that
should be put otherwise: How clever
are we? Innovative and inventive enough
to produce electronic devices of quite
surprising 'intelligence', that's how clever.
Our dependence on these devices has
struck us so emotionally that we suffer
separation anxiety over that very real
dependence, feeling lost and abandoned
uncertain and drearily out of whack
when these inanimate objects that we
awaken to provide their services to us
do so at their own whim and pleasure
or so it seems when on occasion their
utility is withheld in what appears to be
a temporary pique leaving us to wonder
'what did we do wrong?' until suddenly
all is well and their service to our need is
restored. If you feel that something most
extraordinary has occurred, can you then
guarantee it has without snapping a photo?
Only to have your mocking camera inform
gleefully that its battery must be energized
as it withdraws and shuts down and you
with it, crestfallen, put in your place.
