Are we then indeed all born equal or is it a
smug assertion by those who have themselves
attained the comfortable position of sage to
proclaim in support of their open-minded
generosity? Born equal to what then, to whom?
Someone whose genetic inheritance gains him
an early death? The one whose misfortune at birth
is a mental or physical disability? Is life a game
of chance perhaps that where you are born and to
whom impacts your future? Sheer good fortune
or mere luck, no small favour, evades poverty
and the misery of oppression and conflict. Born
equal to bear the lot that is ordained by when and
where and to whom. But it represents a pleasant
fiction notable for its sanctimonious origins that
wealth and opportunity secretly sneer at but the
common folk take uncommon comfort in.
