Apostasy's Vengeance

‘The Prophet Muhammad encounters the angel of half-fire and half-snow’, miniature from a copy of al-Sarai’s Nahj al-Faradis (c. 1465), Herat.

What could be more unifying

than a belief in the divine

whose precepts begin with love

and charity urging believers to

be as one in their care for one

another with the ultimate goal

of achieving peace. Veneration

of the spirit that guides leads

followers to prize the unseen

guiding hand of humanity above

life itself the very same gift the

faith has bestowed upon mortals.

Misfortune it is indeed that human

nature while mouthing the tenets

inspiring that faith turns venomous

and deadly toward those espousing

a variant in descent of the leader

who brought down sacred scripture

to passionate followers who turn

their raging spite to lethal attacks

slaughtering those they deem infidels

and betrayers of the one true faith

above all others as tokens of esteem

for the omnipresent spirit gently

lauding peace while directing those

of faith to leave no stone unturned

in punishment of those spurning the

god-driven imperative to surrender.
