The fiery breath of the wind
on this overheated summer day
in tandem with the glare of the sun
sending its furious fingers of heat
through the forest canopy
has muted the songbirds
cowering within the dense
green branches of cedar and spruce
the forest floor only yesterday
drenched in rainfall held pools
stagnant and whisked into the
atmosphere by furious wind gusts
while above a hawk shrieks as
it coasts on the wind and soon
disappears over the forest crown
drenched this day in boiling heat
from the sizzling cauldron of the sun.
