Spring Delights

Ah, early spring, there's nothing
quite so delightful when sweet breezes
release the savoury aroma of organically
processed food deposited over winter
by a wide assortment of four-footed
companions accompanying
woodland hikers. Newly melting snow
has a habit of revealing all concealed
within its layers. And our beloved
dogs can be forgiven when boredom
leads them to spurn the usual
twigs and bark in a chewing frenzy.
When, however, a sloppily affectionate
kiss is redolent of awful offal recently
indulged in, we can be forgiven
for failing to indulge our pets in
their humble gratitude that our walks
provide the opportunity to graze on
the sudden cornucopia of reeking
edible delights uncertain whether we
are grateful they did not also roll in
the seasonal offerings as a canine
version of our own propensity to spike
our glorious hair with odorous garnish.
