Worlds Apart
The Great Silence reveals that
nothing wishes to make contact
with Earth. Should there exist
some intelligent form of life
in the vastness of the Universe
it obviously shrinks from
contamination with the mad
distemper of human life.
Astrophysicists detect faroff
the presence of planets like our own
circling their suns and desolate
silence prevails. They, on the
other hand, perhaps experience
no problems hearing the clamour
of conflict on Earth. In our world
war is a constant and atrocities
its companion. Extraterrestrial
intelligence detects waves of
countless refugees pleading
with their persecutors, the
weeping of the wounded and
the dying. The heavens weep
torrents of sympathy yet humans
have too little compassion for
their own. This is our world. We
hold no attraction for worlds
spinning in space beyond our ken.
