Lord of the Manor

It is mesmerizing to watch this

creature with its clever, dexterous

hands with opposable thumbs

skilled at manipulating objects with

a singular grace and familiarity much

like my own. He is not the least

perturbed by my presence, nor I

with his. His opportunistic presence

taking advantage of food placed out

for neighbourhood birds and squirrels

is one of casual entitlement. We speak

it would appear the same language so

that there is much we share between us

this round furry animal and me each

engrossed in our separate preoccupations

he to gorge to his heart's content knowing

there will be more to come and me busy

in the garden tidying up after winter.
