Have You Heard?
Living at a time and in a place
where unimaginable comfort and
attainment is not only possible but
readily attained to complement our
lives no longer complicated by the
struggle to survive; all that we could
wish for within our grasp, we turn our
faces in dismay at the gap between
what and who we are and an arcane
imagined ideal brought to us courtesy
of others equally dissatisfied with their
lives but skilled at portraying themselves
as beautiful achievers for whom everything
is possible in a life of leisure and ample
awards, as artists of filmed personae
and events, instilling within the minds
of viewers envy and admiration. That
these skilled professionals are adept
at pantomiming complexities of
character and compelling reactions
to both adversity and opportunity is
sufficient to convince their followers
that theirs is a life worth living unlike
their own betrays a universal naivete.
Though time and again these celebrities
enjoying great public acclaim act
out their real lives in personal failures
breaching the barriers of social trust
to flounder in dysfunction serves little
purpose in betraying the belief in their
exalted status as beacons of perfection.
