Easing The Pain
We hardly know her,a pleasant young womanjust recently taken towalking her two smallScotch terriers in thewoods, a place wefrequent daily. She hasnoted the absence of oneof our little dogs, andtells us she believes inthe healing process ofdiscussing the death of abeloved pet to ease the pain. One of us explains quietlyhow devastating it has beenfor us to lose the presenceof our decades-long companion. He does not speak of the gloomand longing that has settledover us, or the long, fondshared memories. He does, however, add that we havefound it painful, not easeful,to speak of our loss. He saysall this while the other weeps.
