This Is Spring?

The cardinal in our backyard
is certain the spring song he
trills is an accurate reflection
of the season. The robins
searching in our gardens
for live bugs and worms
do so in trust of the season
but in vain. The returning flock
of redpolls feasting at our
bird feeders don't much
concern themselves that nature
has confused the issue of
spring versus winter as snow
squalls alternate with rain
in an exercise of raw weather
polarization -- an insecurity of
reality challenging expectations
