Companions
In this, the height of summer,
the urban forest presents a
monochromatic world of
dense green dominating the
landscape of August. Wild
raspberry canes and thimbleberry
shrubs are flush with bashfully
hidden sweet red fruit.
Damselflies and Dragonflies
poetically arabesque their mythic
secret game in the still silence
of the wooded ravine's lazily
spiralling creek flush after a
morning rainfall. A fluffed
dwarf of a downy woodpecker
browses its plentiful opportunities.
Beside us, a very small dog
trots companionably, oblivious
to the relationship that human
communion deprived him from,
his nature-intended habitat.
