Companions
They're a balm for the spirit,
an antidote to isolation
and loneliness, an
absolute spur to laughter
and sheer enjoyment of
life's little pleasures. Their
warmth and trustfulness,
fidelity and sweet dependence;
love unconditional
in their puppy-antics,
ears aflop and legs
flying in hot pursuit
of anything, anything at all
that moves, inspiring attention
transforming them into
avid adventurers, elfin
whirlwinds of puffed fur,
sniffing snouts, eyes
detecting movement,
ears isolating sound no
mere human can identify.
