Nature's Pique

We have managed to incur Nature's wrath
assuming too greatly our entitlements
ill-earned and unbalanced
causing these incessant dark warnings.

Out of Northern skies comes an unwavering
and dark succession of billowing
cloud formations heavy with portent.
Pummelling, pelting, piercing
out studied landscape in one burst
after another of furious claps of thunder.

Nature proclaiming her sovereignty
over the atmosphere, consolidating
her hold on our fate, lest hubris overtake
caution. Establishing yet again in human
apprehension which is the superior force
which the puny underling.

Lightning ripping the skies
dense and penetrating, resolutely dominant
as we witness, enthralled yet harbouring
that primitive awe of deep-seated respect
tinged with fear at the theatre before us,
eclipsing with its might and majesty

any choreograph puny humans
might ever mount in their fantasies of
power and control. A reminder, this is,
and we tuck it carefully away into memory.
Quick to lapse as we venture into the
sodden atmosphere, resumption of 'normalcy'.

Soon, our garden comes alive with
goldfinches in the plum tree and robins
celebrating the passing storms' lessons.
Humility for us, resumption
of the natural order for them.
