March Weather Alert

Wind chugs and chortles
boisterously nudging tree tops.
The sun playing sly
peekaboo through dark
scudding clouds.

Freezing rainfall
finally relented so off
we hied to the ravine
where chickadees piped calls
flitting from branch to trunk.

And crows slit the wind
defying its relentless force;
a nearby steam locomotive
a passenger jet low overhead
mantling the forest with its drone.

Doing what it can to hasten
moribund winter this month
of wickedly erratic
morosely intemperate tantrums
reluctant release to spring.

The glassy spread of snowmelt
icing the trails
baiting our slips and falls.
Peanuts we’d spread
disappeared; found treasure.

The creek in mud-crested
flow hauling winter’s
detritus, cleansing its banks.
And I’m reminded of childhood:

“Spring is sprung
The grass is riz
I wonder where
the birdies is”
