She's a little dog with a mind of her own
on whom scolding has no effect; she demurs
in her inevitable manner, apologizing
rubbing herself against my calf as we walk
but paying no mind regardless. Her barking
habit is fuelled and fired by knowing there
are other dogs present in the woods, many
friends she knows intimately. Her brother
trotting alongside complements obligingly
raising his baritone to balance her shrill
tones of 'here I am, come and see me!'
And come they do, some conversationally
answering her invitation, then sprinting
across the distance of trails within the
forest interior to sit before us patiently
awaiting the anticipated response as the
cookie bag is opened and out come the
treats, large ones in multiples for the big
pups and smaller treats for the shrimps.
