Suddenly, I am helpless.
A normally capable
woman, accustomed
to comporting myself
with confidence
born of native
intelligence and experience;
it has all been
sapped away and
I seem uncertain,
confused and helpless
while my fully adult
daughter is wheeled on a
gurney, pale face
and blue hospital garb
a slight, defenceless
figure, almost wraithlike,
facing surgery.
