Shielding Me

From our earliest days together
he was always careful of me
gentle, kind and loving. My
welfare was his driver, his
concern for my well-being and
safety uppermost in his mind.
A mind and its concerns that
expanded each time we
produced another child. The
children long since independent
adults, I now remain the sole
focus. Unfortunately, I have
always been accident-prone.
Protective he may be, but
incapable of shielding me
from the consequences of
being none other than myself.
