The Jewels In Our Garden
The rain has washed away the heat
of this day. It has kindly pardoned our
guilt over harshly wilted plants pleading
for relief from the hot summer sun
relentlessly roasting the plump ripeness
from brilliant-hued flower petals,
bleaching leaves pale green in distress.
Suddenly, a sparkling transformation;
the tired garden pluckily energized,
colour returned and with it the jewel-
toned vibrancy of a needs-fulfilled and
mature garden. Water droplets sparkle
on the suddenly renascent leafage, purpose
redeemed. Roses are encouraged to open
buds to the full glory of blossom.
Black-eyed Susans exult in contrast of
black and sun-bright yellow. Soon, the
butterflies, bees and birds will re-emerge
from their storm-proof havens. The butterflies
to alight on the coneflowers, the bees to
gather the inexhaustible pollen from
phlox and hydrangea, the song sparrows
to beak their voluptuous paeans to nature.
